Hours away from the announcement of the delayed preliminary presidential election results, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s capital remains tense. On Thursday there were isolated clashes between riot police and UDPS party supporters in the Limete area of Kinshasa. Many shops and business are shut and most people are staying indoors.

The Democratic Republic of Congo’s incumbent president Joseph Kabila is leading the presidential election, according to partial results announced on Sunday. The country’s electoral commission said Kabila leads his main rival Etienne Tshisekedi by over 1.5 million ballots.

UDPS party says five provinces secured in DRC elections
As votes are tallied and counted in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s presidential elections the main opposition UDPS party told RFI on Tuesday that despite fraud they are confident of securing victory. Etienne Tshisekedi’s party says they have secured enough for a majority and do not want to see the vote annulled.
