Two Britons arrested at Somali border by Kenyan police

Two British citizens arrested by Kenyan police suspected of having ties to Somalia’s Al-Shabaab group are likely to be repatriated to the United Kingdom, Kenyan police told RFI on Tuesday. The men, one of Somali descent, one of Pakistani decent, are being interrogated in Nairobi after being stopped in the border town of Kiunga, north of the Lamu archipelago.

Kenyan soldiers reportedly crossed the border into Somalia on Sunday in pursuit of the Al-Shabaab militant group. A large presence of troops were seen in the area, backed by planes and helicopters, according to Kenyan border officials. This latest offensive against the hardline Muslim group follows a number of kidnappings in Kenya. Two Spanish aid workers were seized by gunmen from the Dadaab refugee camp on Thursday last week.

In an exclusive interview, Zimbabwe’s Movement for Democratic Change spokesperson Nelson Chamisa told RFI on Tuesday that they will ask for help in organising elections which President Robert Mugabe has called for by the middle of 2011. Despite not having a new constitution the MDC is happy with, they have come up with what they call a “stopgap measure”.

After a ground-breaking military deal between France and Britain earlier this week – a report presented in Paris at the French Institute for International Relations (Ifri) says there should be more cooperation between the two countries in Africa.

Africa-France business conference kicks off

The second Africa-France business conference starts in Bordeaux on Wednesday, described by some as the African Davos. It aims to bring together 100 African and 100 French firms to foster new business ties.
Coming just after the Nice summit, which saw French President Nicolas Sarkozy acknowledge the importance of African economic powerhouses such as South Africa and Nigeria, this conference sees companies from across the continent gather in what is traditionally the wine capital of France.

France/Gabon – alleged stolen assets: Who will get Bongo’s cash?

PARIS, FRANCE – While the people of Gabon mourn the death of their President and await his funeral, others are asking themselves what will happen to the criminal case brought against Omar Bongo in relation to alleged stolen assets, and a string of luxurious apartments, bank accounts and cars. Last year Transparency International and the Sherpa association lodged a complaint against Omar Bongo and two other African leaders suspected of profiting from the proceeds of public assets. The complaint led to a criminal investigation into Omar Bongo and his relatives, which established ownership of 39 apartments, 70 bank accounts and nine cars in France.
