Britain’s Glastonbury festival kicked off this week, arguably Europe’s most famous and most celebrated music festival. The area of farmland in Somerset, south-west England is hosting a jam-packed weekend of music, arts and culture.

The festival’s hippy ethos brings together people from all walks of life, offering what it describes as a beacon of hope and aspiration. This year it also celebrates a very special anniversary.

Nuit Electro at the Grand Palais, Paris, Dan Finnan.

On Friday 25 September the 19th century Grand Palais was transformed into a futuristic club complete with fantastic lights and amazing decorations.

French mobile phone provider SFR put on a programme of French electro and international dance music that kept clubbers dancing all night.

Under the glass-panelled roof of the majestic structure there was no shortage of DJs and dance acts, including – Étienne de Crecy, Mondkopf, Naïve New Beaters, Felix Da Housecat, DJ Hell, Pony Pony Run Run and Birdy Nam Nam.

A political debate taking place

Communist, socialist and left-wing organisations gathered in the working class suburb of Le Bourget this weekend for La fête de l’Humanité. Although political debate dominated the agenda – a programme of music, art and theatre pleased the crowds at one of France’s biggest cultural festivals.

The 'Other' stage at the Glastonbury festival 2009

The Glastonbury festival has a hippy past stretching back to the 1970s when Michael Eavis decided to turn his farm in Pilton, Somerset into an enormous party. In 2009 it attracted some of the music industry’s hottest acts, but it is more than just music. Besides the anything goes ethos, there’s an agenda for change which embodies the philosophy of one of the world’s largest greenfield festivals.
