Cairo’s street artists defy authorities with graffiti protest

Cairo’s graffiti artists offered a sarcastic rebuttal to city authorities on Thursday during the last day of voting in Egypt’s presidential elections. Following plans to whitewash street art on Mohamed Mahmoud St, artists instead began the whitewashing themselves spelling out a cynical phrase in Arabic – “forget about the past, focus on the elections”.

Kenyan soldiers reportedly crossed the border into Somalia on Sunday in pursuit of the Al-Shabaab militant group. A large presence of troops were seen in the area, backed by planes and helicopters, according to Kenyan border officials. This latest offensive against the hardline Muslim group follows a number of kidnappings in Kenya. Two Spanish aid workers were seized by gunmen from the Dadaab refugee camp on Thursday last week.

France-UK defence deal could bring cooperation on Africa, report
